Students that major in Wildlife Biology study animal behavior, habitats and characteristics. It also involves investigating animal’s backbone and ecosystem from urban to the wildlife. The job competition in Wildlife can be very fierce and requires serous preparation. There are schools that offer degrees in science or wildlife specifically. Other majors such as biology, zoology and ecology can lead to a career in the wildlife field.

The National Center for Education Statistics has a list of 19 schools that offer a Bachelor of Science degree focusing on the wildlife science. The programs prepare their students for jobs available in the state and federal level that entail dealing with conservation and resource management. In order to get in the wildlife field a certification by the American Fisheries Society or the Wildlife Society is needed. This basic skill is required in the job market. There are other courses that are required besides the typical biology and ecology course. Students also need to take a math, chemistry, physics and other science courses.

The Wildlife majors also require the study of diseases and life processes of an animal. In the wildlife field collecting and analyzing the biological information is essential. This is how a person learns about the animal population and how it affects the land and water. Going out in the field and spending ours conducting studies in the field and writing reports are part of the job.

To be in the wildlife field patience, self-discipline and physical energy is required. The love for the outdoors and wild animals is just some of the elements required to be in the wildlife field. The person also needs to be very detail oriented and a problem solver. For an undergraduate degree in wildlife math and science is required. They also have to maintain a C grade and better in all the biology courses. Hands on training in the field as well as conducting learning experiments in the lab are also needed. There are opportunities to participate in assisting in a research to get a more hands on skill through the school. Students can receive a scholarship and even gain employment after they finish their degree.

Graduate degrees in wildlife biology are very common even when entering into an entry level position. A graduate program is required if a person wants to study intensively a certain species. This includes animals that are in the endangered species list, an aquaculture field or conservation biology field. If a person is looking to enter the teaching field in a university or do an independent research they need to complete a master’s and doctoral program. This is the importance of getting a degree that helps launch a wildlife career.
